If the combination of the UK’s latest snow fall, and the 2018 winter games have inspired you, you’re in luck. Last minute UK rental provider, Snaptrip.com, has pulled together a list of some of the most prolific winter sports events and where in the country you can get stuck in, without getting on a plane:
Alpine, freestyle & cross country skiing
We might be miles away from the Alps but that doesn’t mean you can’t get in on the skiing action. For the real deal, head up to Scotland. There are five ski resorts here; offering the best outside skiing in the UK. If you want to try out something tamer first there are numerous dry slopes and snow domes dotted across the country where you can have lessons and learn the basics. There are even a few small ski resorts in the north of England you can visit.
Curling took the UK by storm during the 2010 winter games in Vancouver. If you want to try your hand at this winter spot there is one dedicated rink which can be found in Kent, but your best bet is to head up to Scotland; there are 22 rinks with curling facilities there.
Figure & speed skating
The elegance of figure skating and fast pace of speed skating is inspiring and exhilarating to watch. Although often synonymous with the festive Christmas celebrations, there are many more than these temporary rinks dotted across the UK. Check out Snaptrip.com’s interactive map to find your local rink.
Bobsleigh & skeleton
Bobsleigh & skeleton are both exciting sports, but admittedly one that isn’t so well suited to the UK’s weather! However, if you have been inspired there is still a way you can give these daredevil sports a go. There is a push track in Bath and you can take part in a taster session here. There are often current GB athletes on hand to give you help and advice throughout the session as well.
Ice hockey is an excellent team sport to watch and an even better sport to play recreationally. If you want to give it a go, check out the interactive map for ice rinks and teams across the UK.
So what are you waiting for? It’s your turn to give it a go, and who knows we might see you at the 2022 games!
